WFNS Spine Committee Meeting at Boston

HECTIC ACTIVITY OF SPINE COMMITTEE AT WFNS CONFERENCE IN BOSTON

1. For the first time a Cadaver Workshop was organized Sunday, the 30th August, 2009 in Boston. The Course was held at Hynes Convention Centre. There were six cadavers. All the faculty members attended the workshop and completed the assigned work much to the delight of attending delegates.

The techniques demonstrated on cadavers were Cervical corpectomy and fixation with expandable cage, Occiput C1 & C2 stabilization, Far out lateral approach to lumbar disc, Cervical discoplasty etc.

In the end the delegates were given free access to cadavers to practice any technique with teachers giving them support. The workshop conducted from 8.00 a.m. till 5.00 p.m. with all delegates in attention till the end.

The Spine Committee also organized an Interactive Session on Fusion or Arthroplasty following cervical discoidectomy with 3 speakers on either side. The session was fought very actively with attending participants culminating in the end with a vote from the audience on the choice of treatment.

2. The Spine Committee Symposium on Emerging Technologies in the management of Lumbar Instability held in a 500 capacity Hall saw lot of attendees standing and watching in absence of more chairs. Dr. George Dohrman alongwith Dr Abbas Amirjamshidi did excellent job of conducting the symposium. For want of more time each speaker was given 10 minutes to speak with enough time given to audience for lively discussion.

3. The Chairman also attended the meeting called by the Incoming President – Dr. Peter Black to discuss plans for the next 4 years.

4. The Chairman was keen to see each committee holding full fledged conferences or cadaver courses to promote the science in each discipline.

5. The Committee meeting was held over lunch at Loue’s Steak House with large number of committee members attending the meeting

Neurotrauma Society Conference

18th Neurotrauma Society Conference was held in Jaipur from 7th to 9th August 2009.

Dr Tastuo Kanno of Japan delivered the P S Ramani oration at the 2009 Neurotrauma Society Conference

Dr Tastuo Kanno, Emirates Professor of Neurosurgery at the Fujita University in Japan delivered the P S Ramani oration. In this oration, he discussed at length the new methodology that he had introduced to give relief to patients in prolonged coma following head injury. The concept was well appreciated and deserves to be implemented in many such cases.

WFNS Conference 2009

Dr P S Ramani, as Chairman of WFNS Spine Committee attended WFNS Conference in Boston, USA from 30th August till 4th September 2009.

1. On the first day, Dr Ramani had organized a Cadaver Course in collaboration with International Faculty Members and was well attended by delegates from 8.00 a.m. till 5.00 p.m.

2. Dr Ramani gave 2 E-poster presentations, 2 platform presentations, conducted a seminar as Chairman and also conducted an Interactive session as Chairman. He also participated in Spine Committee Symposium.

3. He conducted the WFNS Spine Committee administrative meeting and discussions were held on various issues raised in the deliberations.

The meeting was held over sumptuous lunch at Loue’s Steak House. The food was enjoyed thoroughly by all members attending the meeting.

1st WFNS Spine Committee Conference

Dr P S Ramani organized this conference in Bali in Indonesia from 17th till 19th June 2010 in Association with Neuro Surgical Society of Indonesia with Dr Hafid Bajamal, Prof. & Head, Dept. of Neurosurgery, Airlangga University, Surabaya-Indonesia was the Organizing President.

   Dr P S Ramani inaugurating 1st WFNS Spine Committee Conference in Bali-Indonesia on 17th June 2010.

To his right Dr Setyo Widi – President of Indonesian Neurosurgical Society and to his left, Dr Hafid Bajamal, Organizing President of the Conference.

 28 countries participated and 287 delegates were present for the conference. The themes of the conference were
(i) training of young doctors
(ii) degenerative disorders of spine and
(iii) use of implants.

Following programmes were arranged for young doctors.
(i) Free paper competition,
(ii) Poster competition and
(iii) Quiz competition.
The response was very enthusiastic.

The conference was organized in collaboration with 14th ICSM Conference of which Dr P S Ramani has been Founder President and 15th Indonesian Neurosurgical Society Conference.

With senior faculty coming from various parts of the World, the conference maintained high academic standards spiced with generous Indonesian  courtesy. It was interesting to note that till the last event the auditorium was full of delegates.
