PATHDUKHILABHIU NAKA

PATHDUKHILABHIU NAKA

This was the first book I wrote at the expressed request of writress Late SmtNainaAcharya. By the time she came to me, she had published more than 50 books on fiction. She suffered from backache due to prolapsed disc. She was operated upon by me. She would ask me hundred questions regarding her illness and every time she would remark that this knowledge is not available to the general public and would request me to write a book. She in fact compelled me and helped me to write the text, she then took it to Pune and got it published. Much to my surprise and astonishment, on the 18th day of the release of the book, she came again to my house with the publisher telling me that the first edition is over and if I had to add anything more to the second edition. Since then, several editions were released making me aware of the fact that common medical knowledge put in simple words was in fact the need of the society. I started writing more and more books.

MENDUCHIOLAKH

MENDUCHIOLAKH

Common man has no idea whatsoever about the basic general knowledge, anatomy or functioning of the brain. They were perplexed to see why patients with head injury with injury in different parts of the brain behaved differently. This book was written to fill the social gap. It tells common people what is big brain and small brain or what is right side brain and what is left side brain, why the brain is covered with water, and why there should be a long spinal cord attached to the brain. People felt unhappy and distressed why their relative with paralysis of one side of the body could not speak, write or recognize the near ones when their neighbour with hemiplegia could do all these things. They just did not know what is the function of left dominant part of the brain as against right non dominant part of the brain. With advancing age, the brain shrinks due to loss of its components and the first thing that happens is loss of memory. He has not gone mad, but due to loss of components, his memory is lost permanently.

Leave aside 40 years back, but even now, tuberculosis infection is very common in India. In most people, it affects the lungs. In many people, it affects the brain. Several times children are affected more than adults. Malnourished children leaving in unhygienic condition are affected more and at that time, the hospital children’s ward used to be full with children with tuberculosis of the brain. It causes water to accumulate in the brain causing Hydrocephalus. The head starts getting bigger and bigger and the eyeballs roll down. Even after treatment these children remain disabled for life. The best treatment is prevention and truly enough the message has worked with the result that today, although prevalent, the rate has come down.

NEHMICHYASHASTRAKRIYA

NEHMICHYASHASTRAKRIYA

Ailments like appendicitis, hernia, hydrocele, piles, fissure, fistula, etc are very common and everyone, sometime in their life, has suffered from one or more of these ailments without knowing what causes the ailment, what can be done to prevent it, and what precautions should be taken to make sure it does not recur. Thoughts like these, compelled me to compile this book which from the word go became very popular. People just wanted to know more and more about such common ailment. The book was written in co operation with my other colleagues who have been experts on their respective field. That gave glamour to the book as they could pin point most salient features of each illness or surgery. It is now several years that the book was published but even now it is much in demand.

MAANDUKHTE? SPONDYLOSIS!

MAANDUKHTE? SPONDYLOSIS!

Pain in the neck is a common feature day to day in the society. Alternate person walking on the road complains of pain in the neck and wearing a cervical collar has become fashion. There could be several causes for pain in the neck. Cervical spondylosis is one of the common causes which gives rise to pain in the neck. Most of the times it is relieved with medication or with rest. Many people have preferred to take cervical traction and have felt better. However in certain patients with severe pain in one of the arms or with difficulty in walking there is necessity to do surgery. The spinal surgeon helps the patient and gives information about the type of surgery he requires and also performs the surgery. Following operation, the doctor sends him to the physiotherapist to help him increase movements of the neck and build up the muscles of the neck to make it strong. Physiotherapy has an important role to play in cervical spondylosis.

I was requested by daily paper “Sakal” to write a series of articles of interest so that they could publish in their Sunday magazine. The series was a 52 episodes all lasting for one year. I in fact wrote my experiences while practicing spinal surgery that had touched my heart and had an human element in it about medicine. The write up became extremely popular and the readers were waiting to read the next Sunday edition. In view of its popularity, the CEO of Sakal paper requested me to compile it in a book which was done with the help of writress Late SmtNayanaAcharya. She only got it published for me from Pune. The reading is interesting and at several points, it touches your soul. Written in a simple language and edited by NayanaAcharya, the book became popular and is available in most of the libraries.

Backache is the most common ailment and there is no person in the society above the age of 40 years, who has not suffered form back ache at one point or the other. Most of the times it is simple and can be treated easily with medicines for a few days. However, I realized that many times, such backaches could be prevented if one had taken proper care of the back. This prompted me to write this book. In the first half of the book, general knowledge and information is given about back, the spine, the posture and the effect of overweight. Importance of toning the back muscles to prevent simple aches and pains is stressed. In the second half of the book, a set of exercises carefully selected by me is given with illustrations so that anyone without reading anything, but just by seeing the photographs can do the exercises at home without any supervision. The exercises are bound to improve the strength of the back and prevent minor episodes creating backpain.

My main mode of exercise is jogging. Even at this age, I participate in 3 marathons every year and run 21.097 kms besides doing exercises and pranayams. It has kept my body healthy. 30 years back, I found that my blood sugar was slightly high and started taking medicines. Today, with proper discipline of body and mind, I have forgotten that I had diabetes. I do not suffer from any other ailment and definitely I don’t have arthritis. I use the word proper discipline but what is the meaning of it. The meaning has been explained in this book and needless to say, within a short time that book has become extremely popular among the elderly people who just want to grasp copy of the book to know how they can keep themselves healthy with advancing age. The book is made freely available in the book shops.

PAIN IN YOUR NECK

PAIN IN YOUR NECK

This book is English version of the Marathi book that I wrote first. Many people speaking other than Marathi language wanted to read the book. English being a common language I preferred to write it in English but modifies it to certain extent. For example, cervical collars are of different types and patient did not know which one to use when. Similarly, I also realized that several times patient were using cervical collar when the cause of their pain in the neck was not cervical spondylosis. Such patients felt worse when inadvertently, they took cervical traction. Such episodes reminds one that even today, in the world of technology, when most doctors give medicines by seeing the Xrays. Proper clinical examination of the patient has a tremendous role, even today, to play in clinical medicine. When patients ask me how he got better with my medicine, I simply tell them that I give medicines for the patient and not for the Xrays.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

I published my autobiography in Marathi at the end of the first week of December 2005. By the end of December, it had won 3 laurels i- best book, ii- best seller and iii- third edition. The rating was done by Maharashtra times. From that point, there has been no stopping with more than 2 editions printed every year and now, it is running into the 18th edition. When people read it, they appreciate the simple language, emotional feelings that it evokes and it is opinion of the most that it is most transparent book.

Very soon the autobiography was published in English and within months, request came from America to publish it from there. Gujarathi version followed soon and a little later, Konkani version was published from Goa. Couple of years later, the Hindi version was published from Jaipur (Rajasthan) and Braille language edition for the blind by AndaMuktaVikasalaya from Pune. A little later, the Tamil version was published from Chennai.

The initiative for photobiography was taken by ShriAnandLimaye, Chairman, India Printing Works. He was determined to bring out this book and present it to me on my 75th birthday on 30th November 2013. He took lot of pains and travelled from one state to another talking to my students. He felt emotions can only come with personal talk and not be email message. He was proved write by my students. I had to co operate with him which I did. It was a stupendous task, I have a huge collection of images and to select a few was not an easy task. Composing the book by professional artists was another difficult task which he accomplished with peace of mind. Printing of course was not a problem as MrLimaye owns a very sophisticated printing technology. My international friends from all over the world had planned to hold a felicitation for me in India on the 4th September 2013 and I requested MrLimaye to have it published on 4th September. He agreed with me and the book was published by Shri Anil Kakodkar during the function.

The photobiography is published in coffee table size in 4 colours and is hard bound. It has come out beautifully and has been appreciated by all who have seen it.
